How to Deal with your Teens Upcoming Prom

Something of a coming to age experience, or just a fun dance to some—prom will be transformed into a memory that your child, as an adult will look back on. Will you be there to help them look back on it with laughter, fun, or with a little resentment or confusion? After all there’s no one way or perfect answer to parenting, but by being receptive and grounded, you and your teen will feel better about prom.

Realizing it’s not like the movies. Most of the time kids imagine prom to be more wild than it actually turns out to be. Maybe you can even relate, after a long weekend you think, I’m going to go home and cut loose, this weekend will be different! I’m going to have 5 glasses of wine! But in fact you just end up doing what you normally do. So whether it’s your teen talking about how epic prom will be, or it’s the ideas that are running wild in your mind—realize an idea, a thought is always different from the truth, from reality.

Make yourself available. By being there for your teen, they will be more likely to come to you in the event of an uncomfortable atmosphere.

Putting your mind at ease. Will your teen pick up the phone when you call? Or can you provide them with the environment in which they can safely have their celebration?
